The Tuticorin Port crossed the target set by the Union Shipping Ministry during the first shift on March 14, sixteen days ahead of the end of the financial year 2007-08.

Mr A. Subbiah, Deputy Chairman of the port, in a press release, said that the Ministry had set a target of 203.85 lakh tonnes for the financial year.

Thermal coal and containerised cargo registered steep increase during the financial year. Allocation of more fertiliser to the port by the Government of India and the proactive policy on anchorage operation and trade facilitation measures have helped in routing more volume of cargo through the port.

The port is confident of achieving 210 lakh tonnes of cargo by the end of the financial year, he added.
